Custom Consoles builds transmission control desk for Channel 4
August 8, 2007
Custom Consoles has completed the production and installation of a large transmission control desk at Channel 4 Television's Westminster headquarters. Built to the network's specification, the desk is almost 5 metres in width. It incorporates six 19 inch bays plus additional worksurface and storage facilities at each end.
"We were replacing monitor stacks with projectors in our playout control room and took the opportunity to rethink the desk," comments Robert Luggar, Manager of Engineering Projects at Channel 4. "It replaces an earlier desk which had been in use since the building opened in 1992 plus an auxiliary desk which had become necessary to accommodate additional equipment. The new desk can be used by three operators simultaneously and enables everything to be housed in a single unit. This includes three 19 inch LCD touchscreen control surfaces within easy reach of each operator plus nine additional 19 inch screens on Ergotron mounts fitted in line along the rear of the desk. Three free-standing computer monitors are also accommodated on the horizontal worksurface. The profile of the desk is the same as that of all the desks we have bought over the past few years from Custom Consoles. It is a tried and tested design with efficient rear access to cables. This is our eighth Custom Consoles desk. They each have the same profiles and and maple finish with grey Marmoleum script surfaces. We tend to use Custom Consoles for all our large desks. It is an easy company to work with and has the skills and experience necessary to deliver a dependable product."
Channel 4 transmits across the entire British Isles except some parts of Wales which are covered by the Welsh language S4C.
