Custom Consoles broadcast desks, monitor walls and supporting furniture have been chosen as part of a system supplied to Greek television network Skai. The order was placed by Sony Professional Services Europe as part of a major systems-integration project and includes six custom-design desks plus two Custom Consoles monitor stacks. Located in Athens, Skai specialises in high-quality news reality and drama. It transmits on terrestrial analogue UHF and is also receivable thoughout Europe via Hellasat 2 satellite.
Largest of the six Custom Consoles desks are a 5 metre-wide unit installed in Skai's news gallery plus an identical desk located in the continuity suite. Both incorporate a horizontal rear shelf to accommodate IT-based equipment behind the upward-sloping main operating surface. The other four desks are respectively allocated to the senior editor, the master control room and two ingest stations. All are constructed of grey-finished MDF with hard-wearing yellow Marmoleum work surfaces.
"Custom Consoles' portfolio of attractively-styled broadcast furniture was a major consideration in the placement of this order," comments Neil Pilling, General Manager of Sony Professional Services Europe. "Given that this was the first major order we have placed with Custom Consoles, we were pleased by their ability to deliver to promise."
The project included the use of LCD flat panels both for console and monitor stack monitoring. The monitor stacks are located in Skai's continuity suite and news gallery. An additional equipment rack and ceiling-suspended overhead pod were supplied to house audio equipment in the news gallery.
Custom Consoles' Media Wall monitor stack is designed to accommodate large or small arrays of flat-panel monitors and ancillary equipment. Height-adjustable horizontal beams are incorporated, suspended between 2,000 mm high silver-anodised aluminium supports. The beams are available in 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 mm widths and are structured to allow easy attachment of large and small panels using pivoting VESA and plasma-mount fittings. A horizontal cable duct behind each monitor mounting beam routes to a vertical cable duct, enabling easy and expandable housing of power and video wiring. Equipment pods with 19 inch racking behind removable vented panels can be accommodated at floor level.
