May 1st, 2019 – Custom Consoles (www.customconsoles.co.uk) has chosen the 2019 British-Irish Airports Expo as the launch venue for the latest version of its SteelBase and SteelBase Lite range of technical control furniture. New enhancements include the inclusion of CDF (Compact Density Fibreboard) doors and side panels offering greater robustness and manufacturing versatility than traditional MDF.

British-Irish Airports Expo will be held at Olympia, London, June 11th-12th. Exhibiting on stand D2, Custom Consoles will be represented by Managing Director Neil Reid and Sales Manager Gary Fuller.

“We developed SteelBase to combine the robustness required by the utilities and marine markets with the ergonomic excellence and attractive styling naturally expected by customers across all industries,” says Neil Reid. “CDF has the extra advantage of being eco-friendly by eliminating the need for plastic components such as cooling-vent slots which can now be machined into CDF itself.”

Also on the show stand will be a desk from Custom Consoles’ Module-R series which allows customers to specify control room furniture and equipment storage facilities from a very wide range of mix-and-matchable elements. These include rack-mount equipment pods, base sections, 19 inch rack housings, worktops, end-panel modules and legs with concealed cable ducting.

An example of Custom Consoles’ matching MediaWall monitor display mounting system will be exhibited. MediaWall allows flat-screen monitor displays of practically any width to be constructed from standard horizontal and vertical support elements. MediaWall can be deployed as a fully self-supporting structure or coupled directly to a control room wall. Individual screens can be positioned so that the edges meet exactly to form a continuous horizontal display limited only by the boundary of the monitor panel itself.

“BIA Expo is a logical show venue for us as SteelBase, Module-R and MediaWall have attracted many customers in both the civil and defence aviation sectors,” adds Gary Fuller. “Example applications of our desks including baggage handling control and supervision facilities at Gatwick and East Midlands airports as well as control desks for RAF Shawbury, the US Air Force at Lakenheath and Mildenhall, and Guernsey airport.”

RWG Chooses Custom Consoles Module-R Desk for Gas Turbine Control Room

Wednesday, April 17th, 2019

April 17th, 2019 – Custom Consoles (www.customconsoles.co.uk) announces the completion of a technical control desk for RWG Repair & Overhauls Ltd (RWG), one of the world’s leading specialists in gas turbine maintenance, repair and overhaul. The desk is located in the gas turbine control room at RWG’s Ansty test facility in Coventry and will be used by a team of four operators to supervise gas turbine performance tests.

“Custom Consoles’s Module-R series gave us the flexibility we needed to design a desk that met our exact requirements from a standard range of frames and fittings,” comments RWG Test Support Engineer Keith Buckley. “The configuration we needed was an unusual one that would give the team plenty of space to work while at the same time allowing them to operate as a tight-knit group able to react very quickly during the various test processes we carry out.”

“We made a careful study of the available technical furniture and are pleased to report that Module-R has conformed to our highest expectations. It is very sturdily built, ergonomically excellent and attractively styled. The desk accommodates a lot of processing and communications equipment, all of which is easily accessible from front or rear during installation or routine maintenance. That includes the cable ducting which is fully concealed within main desk structure and within the supporting metal legs.”

The desk comprises six bays in total based around a dual-bay-wide central position integrated with a 45 degree right-hand corner section connecting to an additional bay. Two additional bays are located left of centre, forming a 45 degree wing. Equipment pods with angled front panels are fitted in line across the central position with additional pods on the right corner bay.

An Ergotron operator-adjustable monitor arm is mounted above each of the 3U equipment pods, supplemented by two monitor arms above the left bay, a 9th support arm in the right corner bay and and 10th at far right. Total desk dimensions are 6112 mm wide x 2996 mm front-to-back with a floor-to-work-surface height of 744 mm.

A mix-and-matchable control room furniture range, Custom Consoles’ Module-R allows aesthetically attractive long-life desks to be configured to meet specific shapes and dimensions from a selection of high-quality pods, base sections, 19 inch rack housings, worktops, end-panel modules and legs. Coordinated desk pods are available as single-bay sections with up 10U chassis capacity. Module-R has been tested by FIRA to ensure compliance with current ISO standards. It is supplied with full cable management and internal 19 inch racking, accessible via removable front and rear cover panels. All rear surfaces and pods are completely interchangeable. A full length cable brush allows easy reconfiguration.

Custom Consoles Module-R Desks Chosen for IENA Stadium MCR

Thursday, April 4th, 2019

Image shows the larger of the two Custom Consoles Module-R desks in the IENA Stadium master control room.

Custom Consoles announces the completion of a twin-desk project for Switzerland’s National Equestrian Institute (IENA). Working in partnership with the Geneva, Zurich and Lugano based broadcast systems integrator Visuals, two desks based on the Module-R series have been produced and installed in a sports broadcast master control room at the IENA stadium in Avenches.

Visual’s Broadcast Systems Project Manager Peter Sullivan comments:

“The new facility essentially replaces a large outside broadcast trailer which IENA transported to various venues. As a subsidiary project, we have equipped a new smaller mobile vehicle for coverage of sport events at other locations. Our role at the Avenches stadium was to de-install the equipment from the trailer and mount it permanently in the new control room. We have worked with Custom Consoles before and find the Module-R series an ideal basis for progressing from initial planning phase to fully functioning control desks. We made a draft layout showing what equipment was going where. Custom Consoles then did fine-tuning. Space was a key issue, resolved by choosing desks with shorter front-to-back dimensions and compact 3U high equipment pods rather than the taller and deeper 6U.”

Largest of the two desks is a 2.6 metre wide by 950 cm front-to-back five-bay rectangular unit with a centrally inset Sony vision switcher and, to the right, six inset camera control units. Each of the five bays is fitted with a 3U high equipment pod. A 2.6 metre wide monitor rack supports live source, preview and transmission video displays plus near-field monitor loudspeakers.

Located just over a metre behind the main desk is a 1.6 metre wide second desk with a Panasonic camera controller allowing up to 100 IP-connected remote cameras to be operated from a single joystick. The camera controller bay incorporates a 3U equipment pod. To its right is an audio production position with a custom inset well to mount the Yamaha DM1000 audio mixer and a monitor bridge.

A mix-and-matchable control room furniture range, Custom Consoles’ Module-R enables aesthetically attractive long-life desks to be configured in a variety of shapes and dimensions from a selection of high-quality pods, base sections, 19 inch rack housings, worktops, end-panel modules and legs. Coordinated desk pods are available as single-bay sections with up 10 rack unit chassis capacity.Module-R has been tested by FIRA to ensure compliance with current ISO standards. It is supplied with full cable management and internal 19 inch racking, accessible via removable front and rear cover panels. All rear surfaces and pods are completely interchangeable. A full length cable brush enables easy reconfiguration.
