Leighton Buzzard, England, 29 August 2013: Custom Consoles desks and monitor display have been selected for installation at a major broadcasting centre in Cairo. The new installation includes a Module-R production control desk with a Media Wall monitorscape, a Module-R sound control desk and a SystemTwo height adjustable edit-suite desk. These form part of a major studio upgrade.

A 6.7 metre wide by 1.2 metre front-to-back structure, the production control desk faces  a centrally located 4.85 metre wide Custom Consoles Media Wall. Operating positions, from left to right, comprise prompter, producer, graphics, producer, production assistant, lighting and camera control.

The prompter, producer, graphics and production assistant positions are each equipped with standard desktop work surfaces plus a total of seven sloping equipment pods, each with a capacity of 4U. Primary and auxiliary Ross Vision mixers are accommodated in the central section of the desk. A lighting control console is located adjacent to the production assistant position. Camera control panels are set into the desktop at the far right. These are augmented by two rear equipment pods, each with 6U equipment storage capacity.

The Media Wall supports three flat-panel display screens mounted as a panorama, plus two Genelec loudspeakers. Six additional display screens are attached directly to the production control desk via Ergotron adjustable monitor support arms.

An L-shaped desk was commissioned for the sound control room. This houses two 32-fader audio mixing consoles comprising a Studer Vista 1 on the left and a Midas Venice F on the right. A 6U desktop equipment pod just right of centre accommodates telephone hybrid and talkback equipment plus a Compact Disc player. Genelec loudspeakers and an adjustable computer display are attached to the rear of the Studer mixer. A picture monitor is mounted in the central corner of the desk.

Both Module-R desks are finished in oak and have hard-wearing blue marmoleum worksurfaces.

Custom Consoles’ Module-R product range allows customers and system integrators to create robust, efficient and attractive control-room desks from a selection of standard interlocking elements. These include high-quality single-bay, dual-bay and triple-bay desk sections with front or rear access, work surfaces in matching widths, and corner desk sections in 90 degree, 45 degree or 30 degree angles with integral worktops. Other elements of the Module-R range are a slide-out keyboard drawer, equipment pods with 3U, 6U or 8U capacity, a 19 in storage pedestal and a 27U equipment bay.

A 2.2 metre wide SystemTwo desk was selected for the Al Wakala studio edit suite. This consists of a 736 millimetre deep forward worksurface plus a 500 millimetre deep rear shelf. The shelf houses three display screens, two Genelec loudspeakers plus three equipment bays, each with 3U capacity. Custom Consoles’ SystemTwo range includes the S2-01B desk and S2-02B shelf, both electrically adjustable in height from 660 millimetres to 1.25 metres.

Custom Consoles to introduce expanded range of SteelBase desk options at Offshore Europe

Thursday, August 15th, 2013

Leighton Buzzard, England, 15 August 2013: Custom Consoles will introduce new options to its SteelBase range of control room furniture at the Offshore Europe exhibition in Aberdeen, 3-6 September. The company is highly experienced in serving marine-related clients and employs staff who are fully qualified to work offshore. Exhibiting on stand 3D246, Custom Consoles will be represented at Offshore Europe by Neil Reed (Managing Director) and Gary Fuller (Sales Manager).

“SteelBase technical desking is designed for use in industrial process control rooms such as oil and gas production plants where highly robust furniture is required,” explains Graham Buchanan, Commercial Director of Custom Consoles. “The latest version enables clients to specify desks with a 1.2 metre front-to-back depth compared with the previous 1.1 metre depth. This gives operating staff extra leg room in line with the latest ergonomic and safety standards: EN527, ISO 9241 and ISO 11064. SteelBase desks can be specified for single or multi operator environments. Worktops can be rectangular or curved, including angled or curved corners and optional curved-front-profile side panels.

Custom Consoles’ SteelBase is a high-durability technical desking system which can be configured to provide an ergonomically efficient working environment for any size of control room. All elements of the desks are guaranteed against component failure for five years of normal use. The desks are built of high-grade MDF on 19 inch base frames with powder-coated textured-grey vertical panels. Desktops are surfaced in a choice of hard-wearing laminate or marmoleum. Additional design features of the SteelBase range include hinged removable access doors, 19 inch equipment racking, sliding equipment trays, electrical wiring management with desktop cable access, power distribution and data panels and variable-speed ventilation fans.

“We will also be exhibiting our Media Wall modular monitor display system,” adds Gary Fuller. “This has proved highly successful for industrial process control and security monitoring applications as well being very widely used in the broadcast industry. Flat-screen video display panels can be attached individually, in a horizontal row, as a vertical column or as a matrix, complete with fully concealed cables. Media Wall is easy to configure from a range of 1.5 metre, 2 metre and 2.5 metre width frames with optional matching equipment storage pods. Existing installations can be expanded easily by adding extra frames.”

A third feature of the Custom Consoles exhibit at Offshore Aberdeen will be the KAB 24 hour controller chair. This is designed specifically for use in deluxe office environments or during long shifts. Features include adjustable height and tilt, adjustable rocker tension, inflatable air lumbar, adjustable backrest angle and a height-and-tilt-adjustable headrest. Available finishes include all-leather or a variety of fabric/leather combinations. “We originally identified KAB seats for use at our own headquarters,” Gary Fuller adds. “They proved so superior to other makes of office seating in terms of comfort and robustness that we now offer them as part of our own product range.”

ITN chooses Custom Consoles Module-R desk for new production control room

Thursday, August 8th, 2013

Leighton Buzzard, England, 7 August 2013: Independent Television News (ITN) has chosen a large studio control desk from Custom Consoles as part of a technical upgrade at its headquarters in Gray’s Inn Road, central London. More than 8.8 metres in breadth, the desk is an in-line design occupying almost the full width of Studio Control Suite A.

“The new control desk is based on Custom Consoles’ Module-R series which enabled us to configure exactly the structure we needed without the expense of a fully bespoke design,” says ITN’s Head of Broadcast Engineering, Paul Flook. “The desk is wide enough to accommodate a production team of up to seven people. To achieve this within the space available, we specified a configuration giving extra front-to-back depth to the camera control and lighting section at the right-hand of the desk, a Strand lighting mixer being mounted at 45 degrees across a corner section.”

Centred on a Grass Valley vision switcher, ITN’s new control facility consists of six in-line desk sections combined to form a single unit, plus an integrated right-hand sub-unit supporting the lighting mixer. The two desk sections left of the vision switcher incorporate 4U equipment pods with their control panels rising at 15 degrees from the horizontal work surface. These are augmented on the desk adjacent to the switcher by an auxiliary talkback and server control panel set at 30 degrees. The two desks immediately right of the switcher are fitted with larger equipment bays plus, on the right, inset camera control panels. On the far right, the lighting control desk accommodates two 8U high equipment bays and additional support for the 45 degree angled horizontal worktop.

Finished in maple with a hard-wearing graphite work surface, the new desk is fitted with 10 individually adjustable Ergotron LX monitor arms plus dual monitor support.

“Custom Consoles has worked with us on many furniture projects over the years,” Paul Flook adds, “most recently providing Module-R desks for the main production gallery and audio control room at Channel 5 News. The desks are ergonomically efficient, attractively styled and very robust. They also provide the easy access needed during equipment installation and maintenance.”

Custom Consoles’ Module-R product range enables customers and system integrators to create robust, efficient and attractive control-room desks from a selection of standard interlocking elements. These include high-quality single-bay, dual-bay and triple-bay desk sections with front or rear access, work surfaces in matching widths, corner desk sections in 90 degree, 45 degree or 30 degree angles with integral worktops, a slide-out keyboard drawer, equipment pods with 3U, 6U or 8U capacity, a 19 in storage pedestal and 27U equipment bay.

Module-R desks incorporate steel-and-aluminium vertical supports with internal cable ducts. Resting on a broad load-bearing skid, the legs provide high strength and stability, protect studio carpet and allow easy relocation if required during technical rebuilds. Module-R furniture is available as off-the-shelf units in beech, cherry, maple or oak finish with a choice of hard-wearing arabesque, black or blue marmoleum worktops. Cabinet construction is in veneered MDF with continuous brush-strip edging and easy cable access.
