NEAS chooses Custom Consoles desks for NHS healthcare callout centre

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Custom Consoles announces the completion of a 46-workstation furniture contract for the North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust in Newcastle Upon Tyne. This latest project brings to over 300 the number of Custom Consoles desks now being used at emergency response centres.

“NEAS first came to us for desks and storage furniture in 2007 and again in 2009,” states Custom Consoles’ Sales Manager Gary Fuller. “All the installations we have supplied match the original brief from London-based ergonomics consultancy Ham Associates. Basis of the desk design is a wrap-around work-surface which forms a 90 degree quadrant when two are co-located. The design allows efficient office layouts to be configured from combinations of two, three or four workstations.
“This latest installation is for response staff dedicated to a 111 service which allows callers to obtain clinical advice without necessarily requiring an ambulance. Like the ambulance service itself, this is a round-the-clock every-day-of-the-year facility so robust furniture and good ergonomic design were essential. Each desk consists of ventilated left and right computer housings set below the worksurface.

“The housings have hinged doors and are integrated within a robust extruded-aluminium vertical support structure. Power and data cables are housed in a centre section with dual lift-off access doors. The desks are finished in beech melamine with hard-wearing green Marmoleum work surfaces. Each of the 46 desks is equipped with multiple Ergotron monitor arms supporting a flat-panel computer display screens.

‘Worktop and and vertical desk panels with curved corners are fitted to each desk for safety and to enhance the appearance of the working environment. We have received very approving comments about the system and the repeat orders speak for themselves.”
The project includes five electrically height-adjustable work surfaces giving operators the facility to match a desk to their personal preference before commencing a shift or in the course of a long working session.

The North East Ambulance Service provides a number of NHS services covering the counties of County Durham, Northumberland, and Tyne and Wear, along with the boroughs of Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees. That is an area of 3,200 square miles and home to 2.6 million people. The service employs more than 2,000 staff and responds to over 360,000 emergency and urgent incidents each year. Its fleet of more than 500 vehicles clocks close to 10 million miles per year.
