Global Infrastructure Partners, the majority-owner and operator of Gatwick Airport, has chosen Custom Consoles desks, video monitor walls and storage bays for a newly completed baggage-handling and building-management control room. A world leader in the design and manufacture of technical furniture Custom Consoles has supplied a complete suite from its SteelBase and Media Wall product ranges.
“SteelBase desks fully comply with the need for robust and ergonomically efficient furniture that will be used round the clock, every day of the year,” states Custom Consoles’ Sales Manager Gary Fuller. “The Media Wall monitor supports are configured to support 40 inch flat-screens fed by video cameras covering the baggage transit routes as well as computer software displays showing the status of the entire system and the location of any interruption in service.”
Baggage-handling systems throughout Gatwick Airport are controlled from two rows of SteelBase desks, the front row accommodating three operators. Each position is equipped with four desk-mounted computer screens on individually adjustable monitor arms. The second desk row accommodates up to three supervisors and is also fitted with multiple monitor displays on adjustable mounts.
A four-station SteelBase desk on the opposite side of the control room, again with multiple computer monitors on individually adjustable mounts, accommodates staff responsible for engineering-fault management and checking the status of heaters, chillers, ventilators and related devices across all of the airport’s major buildings. This faces two Media Wall multi-screen mounts, supporting four additional 40 inch displays.
In centre of the room is a senior supervisor’s desk with integral storage cabinets. Additional storage is provided under each Media Wall and along an inner wall.
SteelBase desks and Media Wall monitor display supports have also been provided for Gatwick’s Inter-Terminal Transit Control Room and Airport Hold Baggage Screening facility.
Custom Consoles’ SteelBase is a structured desking system of powder-coated textured-grey frames and Marmoleum work surfaces. It offers a basis for the configuration of highly robust bespoke control room consoles. Cable management is provided throughout with access via hinged removable doors at front and rear.
Custom Consoles’ Media Wall is designed to accommodate large or small arrays of flat-panel monitors and ancillary equipment. Media Wall incorporates height-adjustable horizontal beams suspended between 2 metre high silver-anodised aluminium columns. Beams are available in 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 millimetre widths and allow easy attachment of large and small panels using pivoting VESA and plasma-mount fittings. Horizontal cable trunking is provided at the rear of each beam and vertical trunking at the rear of each column, enabling easy and expandable housing of power and video wiring. Equipment pods with 19 inch racking behind removable vented panels can be accommodated at floor-level.
Gatwick Airport is Britain’s second largest airport and the busiest single-runway airport in the world. Located 28 miles south of London and linked to the national rail network, it serves more than 200 destinations (more than any other British airport) in 90 countries for around 33 million passengers a year on short-haul and long-haul point-to-point services. It is also a major economic driver for South East England, generating around 23,000 on-airport jobs and a further 13,000 jobs through related activities. Gatwick Airport is owned by group of international investment funds of which Global Infrastructure Partners is the majority shareholder.
