NEAS chooses Custom Consoles furniture for auxiliary emergency-response centre

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Custom Consoles announces the completion of a major contract for the North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NEAS) in Newcastle Upon Tyne. A total of 46 control desks and matching storage furniture will form a key part of the infrastructure at a new auxiliary 24-hour emergency-response centre.

“The furniture exactly matches desks and storage facilities which we provided in 2007,” comments Gary Fuller, Sales Manager at Custom Consoles. “Designed to an original concept-brief from London-based ergonomics consultants Ham Associates, the desks are configured to be used standalone or in groups of two or three. Each desk incorporates robust extruded-aluminium vertical supports and consists of ventilated left and right computer housings with hinged doors. A centre section with dual lift-off doors accommodates power and data cables. The desks are finished in beech melamine with hard-wearing green Marmoleum work surfaces and are co-located to form curved working areas. Each of the 46 desks is equipped with multiple Ergotron monitor arms supporting a flat-panel computer display screens. Worktop and and vertical desk panels incorporate curved corners both for safety and to enhance the overall appearance.”

This latest order brings to 144 the total number of Custom Consoles desks at NEAS emergency-response centres. The contract includes height-adjustable worksurfaces giving operators the option of setting the desk to match their personal preference either at the start of a shift or to minimise fatigue during a prolonged working session.

The NEAS serves the counties of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham, and Teesside, an area of approximately 3,230 square miles. The Accident and Emergency tier employs 1,021 staff, approximately 48% of whom are paramedics dealing with an average of over 600 emergency calls and 300 GP-initiated urgent calls each day. Each vehicle under NEAS control has a satellite-tracking system which enables staff to determine which can reach the required destination in the shortest time. The service contributes to the achievement of government targets stipulating that 75% of all category A cases be served within 8 minutes.
