Arqiva, Britain’s leading broadcast and communications network provider, has chosen Custom Consoles furniture and monitor support equipment for the digital terrestrial television (DTT) multiplex control room at its broadcast media centre near London’s Heathrow airport.

The new installation includes a five-unit curved Master Control Room desk and dual-unit in-line Engineering desk, both from the Custom Consoles Module-R range. Twelve Ergotron adjustable LCD monitor arms have also been supplied, mounted along the rear edge of the MCR desk. A further six Ergotron arms are similarly located on the Engineering Desk. Both desks incorporate cable ducts carrying data to and from the computer-floor via high-strength profiled metal legs.

“Custom Consoles’ Module-R series was a logical choice for this project,” comments Justin Godson, Head of DTT Baseband Networks at Arqiva. “Besides being robustly built and attractively styled, it gives us a high level of freedom to reconfigure or expand the desks in line with Arqiva’s evolving business. The contract also included matching Custom Consoles cladding for a group of four wall-mounted 67 inch Christie rear-projection picture display monitors positioned in front of the engineering desk.”

“Module-R continues to be one of our most successful product ranges,” adds Custom Consoles Sales Manager Gary Fuller. “It allows technical furniture to be produced to practically any dimensions without the expense of bespoke designs.”

A select-and-combine control room furniture system, Custom Consoles’ Module-R product range offering aesthetically pleasing design as well as high durability. Robust, efficient and attractive control-room desks can be produced to meet specific needs from a selection of high-quality pods, base sections, 19 inch rack housings, worktops, end-panel modules and legs. Module-R desk pods are available as single-bay sections with up 10 U chassis capacity. Cabinet construction is in high-quality veneered MDF. Other features include continuous brush-strip cable access to front worktops. Recent additions to the range include new 19 inch rear-desk equipment pods, new front-access panels with increased ventilation, and optional hardwood worktop edging.

TV4 Sweden chooses height-adjustable Custom Consoles engineering control desk

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Custom Consoles has completed the design and construction of a large height-adjustable engineering control desk for Swedish independent broadcaster TV4. The desk is configured in U-shaped surround formation allowing a powerful array of control and monitoring equipment to be installed within easy reach of a single supervisor.

“We have long and very positive experience of Custom Consoles furniture,” comments TV4’s Technical Director, Jonas Collsi√∂√∂. “Most of our requirements have been met from their standard ranges of desks but this particular installation, for Studio K3, was very unusual and called for a bespoke design. The wing-shaped desk supports six monitor displays used to supervise machine control, Radamec studio camera robotics, as well as Mosart and ENPS playout systems. Custom Consoles has also incorporated equipment pods along the centre and right-hand desk sections to house audio monitoring, intercoms, waveform monitors and auxiliary equipment. Height adjustability gives operators the ability to set the desk to suit their individual preference.”

“This is one of the more complex bespoke height-adjustable desk systems we have supplied to date,” adds Gary Fuller, Sales Manager at Custom Consoles. “It is finished in dark red with a blue Linoleum worksurface. Installation is due to commence at TV4’s Stockholm headquarters in early August.”

TV4 Sweden commenced transmission via satellite in September 1990. Terrestrial broadcasts began on March 1992. All 10 TV4 channels are transmitted from the network’s Stockholm headquarters: TV4, TV4 HD, TV4 Plus, TV400, TV4 Film, TV4 Guld, TV4 Komedi, TV4 Sport, TV4 Fakta, TV4 Science Fiction. TV4 also produces a news channel for 3G mobile and operates Sweden’s largest network of local television stations.

Custom Consoles to double its size at IBC 2009

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Following a successful IBC 2008, Custom Consoles is doubling its planned 2009 exhibit space.

“We confirmed three major orders for broadcast furniture at IBC 2008 and met a large number of potential new customers as well as existing clients,” comments Gary Fuller, Sales Manager at Custom Consoles. “The internet has become increasingly important as a sales window but a good trade exhibition allows people to experience the constructional quality and ergonomic features of our furniture first-hand. We experienced very healthy visitor traffic throughout IBC 2008 which, combined with a new product launch planned for this year’s show, encouraged us to opt for a larger stand.”

Custom Consoles specialises in making furniture to individual shapes, sizes and specifications, either from client instructions or from variants of its standard ranges of desks, monitor racks, storage furniture, mobile equipment pods and computer screen supports. The company’s Module-R product range enables robust, efficient and attractive control-room desks to be produced quickly and cost-effectively from a selection of high-quality pods, base sections, 19 inch rack housings, worktops, end-panel modules and legs. The desk pods are available as single-bay sections with up 10 U chassis capacity. Cabinet construction is in high-quality veneered MDF. Other features include continuous brush-strip cable access to front worktops. Recent additions to the Module-R range include new 19 inch rear-desk equipment pods, new front-access panels with increased ventilation, and optional hardwood worktop buffers.

The innovative and highly successful Media Wall is designed to accommodate large or small arrays of flat-panel monitors and ancillary equipment. Media Wall incorporates height-adjustable horizontal beams suspended between 2 metre high silver-anodised aluminium columns. Beams are available in 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 mm widths and allow easy attachment of large and small panels using pivoting VESA and plasma-mount fittings. Horizontal cable trunking is provided at the rear of each beam and vertical trunking at the rear of each column, enabling easy and expandable housing of power and video wiring. Equipment pods with 19 inch racking behind removable vented panels can be accommodated at floor-level.

Custom Consoles’ Media Desk forms the basis of an ergonomically-efficient and cost-effective working environment for desktop editing systems, allowing users to adjust working posture at their own desk or when operating across several locations. Height adjustment can be made quickly and easily using a retracting handle operating through a geared drive.

System 2 is a multi-element furniture system designed to accommodate free-standing or pod-mounted equipment such as graphics workstations and editing terminals. The latest version, introduced at IBC2008, has many new features including a front-facing cable-access slot eliminating the need to loop cables from the rear. The System 2 range includes the S2-01B desk and S2-2B, both electrically adjustable in height from 660 to 1,200 mm.

Custom Consoles will be exhibiting on stand B15 in Hall 8 at IBC 2009, RAI-Centre, Amsterdam, September 11-15.
