Custom Consoles completes major bespoke furniture contract for Discovery Channel

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Custom Consoles announces the completion of a contract for six fully-bespoke technical desks which have been installed at the London studios of Discovery Channel in Discovery House, Chiswick. The desks were commissioned for two video suites, two audio post-production suites and two voice-over studios.

“Custom Consoles desks were part a substantial design and building project commencing with open floor space and involving the construction of new creative facilities and soundproofed rooms,” comments Ian Baker, Technical Services Manager at Discovery UK/EMEA. “We knew Custom Consoles as a potential supplier and discussed our requirements with them at IBC2008 before ordering the desks. Timescale from placement of order to delivery was two months which is quite respectable for totally bespoke furniture. The desks have proved an ideal combination of good ergonomics, clean and attractive styling, strong construction, and high resistance to operational wear. We have opened the suites to Discovery staff and everyone is very happy with the result.”

“Discovery’s architects specified a hard-wearing white finish to match other furniture at the channel’s premises,” adds Custom Consoles’ Sales Manager Gary Fuller. “All six desks were constructed to the exact required dimensions and consist of an MDF substructure with very tough white-laminate on all exposed surfaces. The two audio desks incorporate open-access equipment storage bays above and below the work surface. A Digidesign virtual audio mixing desk occupies the middle desktop area immediately in front of the operator. The two video edit suite desks incorporate a ventilated computer storage pedestal to the operator’s left and a 13 U high equipment storage bay on the right. The work surface of each video edit desk accommodates three LCD picture monitors on Ergotron mounts at the rear of the desk. A fourth LCD monitor sits on the desktop. The voiceover desks are smaller units with a central desktop equipment bay.”
