Custom Consoles Media Wall installed at BBC World Service

BBC World Service has joined the growing number of broadcasters using Custom Consoles’ Media Wall monitor support system. The installation is of unusual configuration as the Media Wall was required to span a window between the control room in which it was installed and an adjacent radio studio, maintaining line-of-sight view. Loudspeakers, clocks, cue lighting and video monitors are attached to the Media Wall, the video monitors being positioned at high viewing level across the window.

“The studio in which this Media Wall was installed is used very intensively,” comments Custom Consoles’ Sales Manager Gary Fuller. “We were awarded the contract on the basis that we could assemble the unit over a weekend when the studio schedule was relatively light. The entire mechanical installation was completed in a single day.”

Custom Consoles’ Media Wall is designed to accommodate large or small arrays of flat-panel monitors and ancillary equipment. It incorporates height-adjustable horizontal beams suspended between 2 metre high silver-anodised aluminium supports. Beams are available in 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 mm widths and allow easy attachment of large and small panels using pivoting VESA and plasma-mount fittings. A horizontal cable duct beneath each monitor mounting beam routes to a vertical coil, enabling easy and expandable housing of power and video wiring. Equipment pods with 19 inch racking behind removable vented panels can be accommodated at floor-level.

Based at Bush House between London’s Aldwych and The Strand, BBC World Service (www. www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice) transmits in 33 languages to many parts of the world. In May of this year, the BBC reported that the World Service’s average weekly audience had reached 183 million people, beating the previous record of 163 million listeners set 2006.
