Custom Consoles reports buoyant IFSEC2007

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

Custom Consoles, Britain’s most successful manufacturer of security and process-control furniture, reports a buoyant and dynamic IFSEC2007 exhibition. This year’s event saw UK and international visitor numbers rise, strengthening IFSEC’s position as a major security industry show. Two major additions to Custom Consoles’ range of security furniture were introduced at the show: the MediaOne control desk and the modular M Desk Technical range. An enhanced version of the innovative Media Wall modular monitor mounting system was also displayed.

“IFSEC once again attracted a good mix of clients, potential customers and resellers from Britain and overseas,” comments Custom Consoles’ Sales Director Gary Fuller. “The security industry is increasingly aware of the benefits that derive from careful furniture selection, both in terms of value for money and in staff efficiency. Ergonomics are becoming increasingly important given the amount of time many people spend in front of computer workstations.

“Our new M Desk Technical allows bespoke security furniture to be configured quickly from a range of accessibly-priced standard modules. These include equipment pedestals and free-standing desktop pods. M Desk Technical is ideal for PC-based security and process control rooms as it allows ergonomically-efficient working environments to be configured quickly for large or small control rooms. Three-layer horizontal cable ducting is incorporated throughout the entire desk. The legs are our proven M Desk aluminium extrusions with integral cable management.

“We also showed the new MediaOne control desk which combines height-adjustability and ultra-modern styling. Optimised for space-saving flat-screen computer monitors, MediaOne incorporates a retractable telescopic handle which operators can use to select their preferred desktop height.

“The latest version of our Media Wall system also received a very positive response. It provides a stable housing for large or small arrays of flat-panel monitors and ancillary equipment. Media Wall employs height-adjustable horizontal beams suspended between 2,000 mm high silver-anodised aluminium supports. The beams can be supplied in 1.5, 2 and 2.5 metre widths with the optional of coupling multiple units to create very large-scale monitor walls.  Pivoting VESA and plasma-mount fittings can be attached quickly and reliably.”

“IFSEC visitors recognised the value of working with a UK-based manufacturer that can respond quickly to their specific needs without the delays inherent in a long supply chain. Our pre and post sales support are second to none.”

Custom Consoles builds transmission control desk for Channel 4

Friday, June 8th, 2007

Custom Consoles has completed the production and installation of a large transmission control desk at Channel 4 Television’s Westminster headquarters. Built to the network’s specification, the desk is almost 5 metres in width. It incorporates six 19 inch bays plus additional worksurface and storage facilities at each end.

“We were replacing monitor stacks with projectors in our playout control room and took the opportunity to rethink the desk,” comments Robert Luggar, Manager of Engineering Projects at Channel 4. “It replaces an earlier desk which had been in use since the building opened in 1992 plus an auxiliary desk which had become necessary to accommodate additional equipment. The new desk can be used by three operators simultaneously and enables everything to be housed in a single unit. This includes three 19 inch LCD touchscreen control surfaces within easy reach of each operator plus nine additional 19 inch screens on Ergotron mounts fitted in line along the rear of the desk. Three free-standing computer monitors are also accommodated on the horizontal worksurface. The profile of the desk is the same as that of all the desks we have bought over the past few years from Custom Consoles. It is a tried and tested design with efficient rear access to cables. This is our eighth Custom Consoles desk. They each have the same profiles and and maple finish with grey Marmoleum script surfaces. We tend to use Custom Consoles for all our large desks. It is an easy company to work with and has the skills and experience necessary to deliver a dependable product.”

Channel 4 transmits across the entire British Isles except some parts of Wales which are covered by the Welsh language S4C. It is available on all digital platforms (terrestrial, satellite and cable) as well as through traditional analogue transmission. Channel 4 also operates a number of other services, including the free-to-air digital TV channels E4, More4 and Film4, and an ever-growing range of online activities at channel4.com, including the broadband service FourDocs and Channel 4’s bespoke video-on- demand service 4oD. The Film4 production division produces and co- produces feature films for the UK and global markets.

Custom Consoles M Desk Technical chosen for Microsoft security centre

Friday, June 1st, 2007

Custom Consoles has completed a major corporate furnishing project for Microsoft’s UK headquarters at Thames Valley Park, Reading. Six desks from the recently-introduced M Desk Technical range were installed in an 84 square metre Security Operations Centre accommodating eight operators and two supervisors. All six desks are finished in maple with hard-wearing graphite-grey Marmoleum worksurfaces and matching extruded edging.

Positioned as two groups of two forming the front and middle row, the four operator desks are identical in design. Both supervisor desks are mounted on a raised platform at the rear of the room. All ten positions are equipped with three Ergotron adjustable monitor arms also supplied by Custom Consoles. These are fitted to the rear of each desk and support 19 inch LCD screens. Each worksurface also accommodates a laptop computer dock. The contract also included matching Marmoleum-finished storage surfaces for existing grey storage cabinets.
Custom Consoles’ M Desk Technical range was chosen by London-based project management consultancy Workplace Designs Ltd.
“We approached four workstation manufacturers before deciding on Custom Consoles,” comments Project Manager Louise Wood of Workplace Designs. “We visited their factory in Leighton Buzzard and were impressed by the design and strength of their desks. M Desk Technical offered exactly the facilities we needed, including high structural quality and easy access to cable ducts.”
“The facility will be used 24/7 so robustness and good ergonomic design were important issues,” adds colleague Andrew Sapio. “Cost was obviously a factor but also it was very much the people. Custom Consoles listened to our ideas and came up with a solution that was exactly right for us.”
M Desk Technical is a structured system allowing bespoke security furniture to be configured from a range of standard modules combined with user-specified work-surface dimensions. The range of modules includes 13U high 19 inch equipment pedestals and free-standing 19 inch desktop pods. Features include a 900 mm deep work surface, heavy cable management and flat screen mounting. Removable access panels can be located at the front or rear.
Three-layer horizontal cable management can be routed along the entire width of the desk with access via an intermediate leg or pedestal. Alternatively three-compartment trunking can be fitted. M Desk Technical is available in maple veneer or textured grey sprayed finished with a choice of Marmoleum work surface colours. Legs are Custom Consoles’ proven M Desk aluminium extrusions with integral cable ducting.
Designed around BS EN ISO9241-5 ergonomic requirements and manufactured in Britain, M Desk Technical is available within typical lead times of 14 to 21 working days from design-approval.
